How to find Fault in H T Line

HOW TO DETECT FAULT IN H T LINE

In the distribution network, if any electrical fault occurs in H T lines then how to we find the fault in the h t line. what is the step-by-step procedure to find fault?

Suppose in 33/11 kv substation a 11 kv h t line is emanating from the substation and the ht line include or made from different section means some length of line is made cable and some is made from ACSR conductor and some section again is made from a conductor.

1- 1000 m made from acsr dog conductor. after that

2- 500 meter is made from XLPE cable

3- Again 2000 km is made from ACSR conductor.

This means it may be this H T line is made from full acsr conductor or full xlpe cable or mixed acsr conductor and xple cable both.

Procedure to find Electrical fault in distribution network-

suppose a fault occur in h t line and 11 kv breaker got tripped and we take one try to make the breaker hold and on making try to hold the breaker again tripped. Then we start patrolling of h t line to search where a fault has occurred.

step by step procedure is explained below-

1-first of all we search if there is any damage in h t insulators.

2-if damage to any insulator is found then we replace the insulator.

3-if all insulators found ok. then we check for OUTDOOR JOINT KIT in XLPE Cable.

4- If any damage is found then replace the cable joint kit.

A 4-if fault is not found in the joint kit, then an open any section from the middle of the h t line.

5-do megger on each side of the section. means left and right both side megger would be done.

6- On one side megger will show zero ohms. The zero megger side will be the faulty side. means side of fault would be detected.

7- Repeat the same above work in the faulty side. This means open the faulty section(rest of line or faulty side) from the middle of the line.

8- Again faulty side will show zero meggers.

9-when the section will gradually be shortened then it will be easier to locate the fault.

Major Reason due to which fault occurs on line –

generally, the following thing happened when the fault happened.

a- Insulator damaged

b- Outdoor cable jointing kit damaged

c- Conductor got touched by any tree/branch

d- Conductor could get down from insulator to cross ARM

e- ANY BIRD GOT short-circuiting

f- Any kite stranded in-between phase conductors.

g- Straight through jointing kit could be damaged

h- Relay could be set on lower value

i- Or a relay could be mall functioning

j- Or XLPE cable could be cut by some machine(jcb machine)

k- The power transformer could be showing mall functioning.
